Planner Pages

notebook_01 Planner pages will be used every day in second grade and will be in your student’s Rock Star Binder. At the end of each day your student will record  “I can” and “I plan to” statements. “I can” statements are targets learned/practiced in class. My hope is that when you (parents) ask, “What did you do at school today,” your student won’t be able to say, “I don’t know.” They can look back to their planner pages and use their “I can” statement as a conversation starter to talk about something they worked on that day. “I plan to” statements will help your student work to manage their time, and complete their homework packets weekly. Each day they will write what they want to work on that night at home. Homework packets are always due on Friday (or the end of the week).

Work Expectations

  1. Class Work: Should be neat and completed on time. Ample time is given in class; however, if work is not finished, it may become homework.

  2. Homework:

In second grade we strive to teach students the importance of responsibility.  One way we do this is through weekly homework.  Each Friday, the students will be given two assignments.

Reading Log: Students are expected to read 60 minutes a week. They will keep track of this in the weekly reading log.

Writing: Students will write an organized paragraph on a given topic (new topics each week). They will complete the editing checklist on the backside of the page. When all checks are in the “yes” column, students are ready to turn in this assignment. Parents must sign the back of this sheet before students hand it in.

This packet will always be due on the following Friday.  It is the student’s responsibility to complete the packet at home during the weekend/week.  Through the learning of time management, the goal is that each student can plan how and when to complete their homework and have it ready by Friday.

A mark for responsibility will be given for any work that is not complete. Late notices will be sent home on Friday for incomplete work.  The late work will be due the following Monday or the student will be required to serve a lunch detention to complete it.

In addition to the weekly subject homework, the students will be required to have their weekly behavior sheet signed on Fridays (or the last day of the week). These are due the following Monday (or the first day of the week).

  3. Late Work: A mark for responsibility will be given for any work that is not complete. Late notices will be sent home on Friday for incomplete subject homework.  The late work will be due the following Monday or the student will be required to serve a lunch detention to complete it. If a behavior sheet is not signed on Monday, the student will receive a mark for responsibility.

Spelling

Students will almost always bring home their list on Fridays (last day of the week) to study for the upcoming week. This will be located in their Take Home Folder on the right side labeled, homework.

  • Pretest– We will take a Spelling pretest on Monday (the first day of the week) every week. Students who have no spelling mistakes on the pretest will not be required to take the test on Thursday.

  • Challenge Words– The challenge word lists are comprised of additional words for the weekly spelling patterns. Students are encouraged, but not required, to learn/practice these words throughout the week. 5 challenge words will be chosen at random, and given during Thursday’s spelling test. Correctly spelled challenge words will count as extra credit points.

  • W.O.W. word– Our weekly W.O.W. (word of the week) word will also be tested as part of the challenge words and count as extra credit if spelled correctly.

Snack

In second grade, we eat lunch at 12:30.  This is a long time for the little ones to go without a snack!  As a result, your child will have a daily snack time in the morning in which he/she will be able to eat a HEALTHY, PEANUT FREE snack. I encourage you to send a small snack with your child each day.

A list of approved snacks and a more detailed explanation of our classroom snack routine came home with your student. If you, at any time, need another copy of the safe snack list please do not hesitate to contact me or check our class webpage.

VIP Student

Each child will have the opportunity to be our “VIP Student” for a week out of the school year. Your VIP will bring home an “All About Me” poster to complete the Friday before their week begins. We will display this poster for all students to see. That student will enjoy special privileges and rewards during the week. At the end of the week they will present their “All About Me” poster and may bring in up to 3 items to “show and tell.” They will also be interviewed by the class.
