Reading Counts!
We will take SRI tests 4 times this year, and a printout of scores will go home each time. The goal is for your child to have a lexile score between 300 and 600 by the END of 2nd grade. If your child’s report says BR (0), it stands for beginning reader. Lexile scores under 100 points will always show up as 0.
The Recommended Reading Report provides book titles within your child’s lexile range. At the beginning of the test your child chose three categories of interest. These are the three categories listed on the Recommended Reading Report. The next step is for your child to pick out books within his/her lexile, and take an online quiz at school after the book is completed. While some of the books are in our school library, some of them are not. The Bloomington Public Library is another good place to check for these books. Please encourage your child to read books within their lexiles and take quizzes! If you have questions about a book’s lexile you can look it up at:

It is important to note, however, that students don’t need to choose books within their lexile range every time. If they are very interested in a topic, author, or series of books that might seem too easy or too hard, I usually still let them check those books out. It’s more important to foster their love and interest in reading, rather than getting too focused on lexile scores! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Below I have listed the prizes the students will receive for passing the Reading Counts Quizzes.
Number of quizzes passed:
5 = pencil
15 = computer time
25 = no homework coupon
35 = desk swap (with any other student)
45 = lunch with Miss Sands
Your student must pass a quiz for it to count toward a reward. They will keep track of their passed quizzes with a sticker chart. Students are responsible for keeping track of their sticker count, and letting Miss Sands know when they have earned a reward. Good luck!!
